Foong-Yen Lim, MD, Professsor of Surgery, Cincinnati Children's Hospital. Surgical Director, Cincinnati Children's Fetal Care Center.
I have a deep passion for working with babies and children—they are resilient, joyful, and constantly inspire me to be a better person. From before birth to childhood and into young adulthood, I am dedicated to caring for my patients through each stage of their development. The privilege of being involved in fetal, neonatal, and pediatric surgeries is incredibly meaningful and rewarding. There is no greater honor than witnessing these children grow and thrive.
I am especially passionate about caring for patients with congenital anomalies. I firmly believe that fetal surgery, when performed appropriately, offers a unique opportunity to intervene in severe health conditions that conventional treatments cannot address. In cases where fetal intervention is not appropriate, ensuring a smooth transition from the intrauterine to postnatal environment is crucial for optimizing outcomes.
While evidence-based, protocolized care is essential for improving patient outcomes, research and innovation are also critical in advancing the field of pediatric and maternal-fetal medicine. Together with the fetal team in Cincinnati, we have successfully performed over 2,300 fetal interventions, including more than 1,900 fetoscopic procedures. Our team works tirelessly to provide the highest level of care, striving for the best possible outcomes for our patients. This care extends beyond surgery and treatment—we are committed to educating families, offering outreach, and contributing to research that benefits both our patients and the broader community.
Clear, open communication with patients and their families is vital. We make it a priority to ensure that families have all the knowledge and support they need to understand their child’s medical and surgical conditions. Regardless of whether the patient is a fetus, infant, child, or young adult, we always work closely with families as an integral part of the care team. The positive impact of family involvement on a child’s health is undeniable, and we consistently see its benefits in our practice.
