Pediatric Surgery/Urology, Indigenous Lead Children's Hospital
The Children's Hospital of Winnipeg
Oakbank , Manitoba, Canada
Melanie Morris, (MD, University of Manitoba) is a Michif francophone mother, surgeon and scholar. She is a daughter of the Red River Metis with heritage from Wales. Her great-grandfather Solomon Hamelin served on Louis Riel's senate in Manitoba. As unlikely as it may be, Melanie was chosen to be the Indigenous lead of the children's hospital and was invited by the esteemed Dr. Wayne Clark to be the Metis Lead for the Accelerating Clinical Trials National Consortium. Also unlikely, as an Indigenous person, she counts herself fortunate to work as a pediatric surgeon and urologist. She is also grateful to work with an incredible team at the Winnipeg Breastfeeding Center. Melanie has been exceptionally lucky to receive awards and be recognized nationally but counts herself so fortunate to work on near the scrip lands her ancestors were given and on the homeland. She understands the colonial forces are still in full force and so will continue to carry on her work to change the tides not only for and with the Metis but for, with and alongside her Inuit and First Nations relations.
