Dr. Puligandla MD, MSc, FRCSC, FACS, FAAP, MAMSE from the Montreal Children's hospital completed medical school at Western University, graduating as a member of its Hippocratic Council Honor Society. He continued at Western, completing his general surgery training concurrently with an MSc in Respiratory Physiology. He then pursued fellowships in both pediatric surgery and pediatric critical care medicine at the Montreal Children’s Hospital (MCH). He was appointed as full-time Faculty in both specialties in 2003 and currently holds the academic rank of Professor in Pediatric Surgery, Pediatrics and Surgery. Administratively, he completed a 6-year term as Associate Chair for Perioperative Services at the Montreal Children’s Hospital has been the Director of the Harvey E. Beardmore Division of Pediatric Surgery since February 2024. Dr Puligandla is the former Program Director for Pediatric Surgery, a position he held for 15 years, during which time he was named to McGill’s Faculty Honour Roll for Educational Excellence (2015) and he received the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Program Director of the Year Award (2022).
Dr. Puligandla’s involvement in medical education and curriculum development extends beyond McGill University. In 2018, he was elected to the Pediatric Surgery Board (PSB) of the American Board of Surgery (ABS), the first Canadian to hold such a position in 40 years. In his duties for the PSB-ABS, he is co-chairing the EPA Scope and Writing Councils for Pediatric Surgery as the ABS launches a competency-based platform for board certification in 2025.
Dr. Puligandla has held leadership positions in several professional organizations over his career. In 2022, he was elected to the American Pediatric Surgical Association’s Board of Governors and was recently named the President-Elect of the Canadian Association of Pediatric Surgeons (2026-2028). Academically, his research focuses on health services/outcomes for surgically correctable congenital malformations, specifically congenital diaphragmatic hernia. He has published extensively, with >100 peer-reviewed articles, review articles and book chapters to date. He has also accumulated >100 conference presentations and >30 invited speakerships.
