Kurt Heis, MD, is Professor Emeritus of Surgery and Pediatrics at Emory University School of Medicine. He was born to US Army parents serving in Frankfurt Germany and came to the US in 1957. He received a BA from the University of Colorado - Boulder, attended the University of Michigan for medical school, general surgery residency and a Critical Care-ECMO fellowship, and trained in pediatric surgery at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. He joined Egleston Children’s hospital and Emory Healthcare in 1991. He served as the Egleston Chief of Surgery from 1997-2000, Medical Staff president from 2003-4, and Vice Chair of the Emory General Surgery department from 2005-2009. He was the Medical Director of Quality for Surgical Services at CHOA from 2009-2020, when he retired. Nationally, he chaired the SOSu Executive Committee for the AAP during 2018, where he focused efforts on Opioid Reduction in Surgery, and Surgeon Wellness. He is married to Karen Bankhead, his college chemistry lab partner, and they have 4 children and 9 grandchildren
