Pediatric Surgery Research Fellow & PhD Candidate
The Montreal Children's Hospital - McGill University Health Centre
Syracuse, New York, United States
Alexandra Dimmer, MD, MSc, PhD(c) is a PGY-3 surgical resident at SUNY Upstate, who recently completed a pediatric surgery fellowship at McGill University, and is currently completing her final year of her PhD at McGill University. She will applying for the pediatric surgery fellowship match this upcoming year, for entry in 2027. She completed her BSc in Anatomy and Cell Biology, as well as her MSc in Family Medicine Research from McGill University, prior to embarking on her medical school journey in 2016. She obtained her medical degree from St. George’s University in 2020, and subsequently began her general surgery residency at SUNY Upstate Medical University, in Syracuse, NY. Her research project is entitled "Exploring Survivor Morbidity and Quality of Life in Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia.” Her study utilizes a mixed methods study design to demonstrate the impact of Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH) on the quality of life of patients with CDH and neurodevelopmental impairment, from their perspective. The voices of children and their families are rarely heard over the trajectory of their care, and while a few studies have superficially explored CDH morbidity and quality of life, no study to date has addressed survivor morbidity utilizing a qualitative methodology that focuses on the voices of the patients/families during their medical journey, demonstrating the importance of this work. This project aims to describe the evolution of disease for patients with CDH and neurodevelopmental impairment, and to demonstrate the impact of this condition on both the patient and family quality of life.
