Melissa Matthews has held a faculty appointment as a Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt in the Department of Pediatric General Surgery and Trauma since October 2014 with the primary focus of inpatient management of surgery and trauma patients. She graduated with her BSN from Mississippi College in 2008. She then completed her MSN from Vanderbilt University in 2012 and is a boarded certified Pediatric Clinical Nurse Specialist (PCNS-BC). She also completed her Post-Master’s certificate in 2014 at Vanderbilt University and is a boarded certified Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (CPNP-AC). Melissa began working at Vanderbilt through the Pediatric Nurse Residency Program in 2008. As a nurse practitioner, she has developed the gastrostomy tube replacement clinical practice guideline, is a member of the Patient Advocacy Reporting System (PARS) team for the Vanderbilt Center for Patient and Professional Advocacy as a Peer Messenger, is the program committee co-chair for the Section of Affiliated Professionals in Pediatric Surgery (SOAPPS) of the American Pediatric Surgical Association (APSA), and has enjoyed teaching pediatric clinicals at the undergraduate level for Belmont University and Lipscomb University. She enjoys traveling and spending time with her husband, 7 year old son, and 9 year old Schnoodle.
