Resident
Department of Surgery, The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai
New York, New York, United States
Olivia Katz is a third-year general surgery resident at The Mount Sinai Hospital. She grew up in New York City and then moved to Philadelphia where she graduated Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Pennsylvania with distinction and research excellence in molecular and cellular biology and minors in chemistry and bioethics. She then continued onto the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating with certificates in Academic Surgery, Quality and Safety, and US Healthcare Policy, and was awarded the Ari Frosch Memorial Award for Advocacy and Social Justice in Medicine. From there, Olivia returned home to NYC where she joined the Icahn School of Medicine General Surgery residency program and was named the 2022-2023 Intern of the year. This summer, she will be heading back to Philadelphia to join the Peranteau lab at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia to conduct research on gene editing for fetal anomalies.
Olivia has dreamt of becoming a pediatric surgeon since the 5th grade when she needed surgery but found herself left with many fears and questions going into the operating room. She became determined to become a surgeon with both the operative skill and the compassion to reassure patients and their families during a difficult time. She is particularly interested in embryology, congenital defects, fetal and neonatal surgery, and understanding and improving how patients of different ages understand and experience the surgical process. When not in the OR, Olivia loves to go on adventures with her dog Peanut, make and eat ice cream, water and snow ski, and jetski with dolphins and whales.
