Dr. Russell received his undergraduate degree from Washington and Lee University. Subsequently, he received his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. He completed his general surgery residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 2010. During his research years in residency, he obtained a Master’s in Public Health at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and was awarded a F32 National Research Service Award by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He then completed his pediatric surgery fellowship training in Indianapolis at Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University in 2012. He specializes in surgical care for children, is the Trauma Director at Children’s of Alabama, and has an active clinical research interest in traumatic coagulopathy and pediatric trauma resuscitation. Most recently, he completed a NIH funded Consensus Conference involving national experts evaluating the existing literature and research gaps pertaining to Guidelines for the care of Pediatric Trauma patients in Hemorrhagic Shock. He served as the guest editor the recently published supplement detailing the output of this conference for the Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery.
