Kevin P. Lally, MD, MS is the Chairman of the Department of Pediatric Surgery at McGovern Medical School and the Surgeon in Chief at the Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston. He is a distinguished graduate of the US Air Force Academy and graduated from Tulane University School of Medicine in 1980. He finished a residency in General Surgery with the U.S. Air Force and went on to finish a residency in Pediatric Surgery at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. After 4 years at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center, he joined the faculty at the McGovern Medical School at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in Houston where he has remained. Dr. Lally is currently the A.G. McNeese Professor of Surgery and Richard Andrassy Distinguished Chair in Pediatric Surgery.
Dr. Lally has been involved in extracorporeal life support since 1986 and served on the Executive committee of the Extracorporeal Life Support organization for a number of years. He founded the first ECMO program in Houston at Memorial Hermann in 1992. That program has now cared for over one thousand patients. He co-edited the 3rd edition of the ECMO textbook. Dr. Lally helped to found the Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Study Group and CDH registry. The registry has now accumulated data on over 15000 infants with CDH making it the largest of its kind worldwide. There are currently 91 centers participating in the CDH Study Group from 18 countries. Dr. Lally has published over 270 peer reviewed publications. He has edited multiple monographs on CDH and ECMO, numerous book chapters and has authored or co-authored over 90 peer reviewed articles on CDH.
Dr. Lally has won numerous awards nationally and internationally and has been an invited speaker on 5 continents. He has held leadership roles in many national and international pediatric surgical organizations. He has 4 children and 7 grandchildren and has been married to his wife, Pam, a retired pediatrician for 41 years.
