Dr. Cass is a pediatric general and thoracic surgeon who specializes in fetal surgery and perinatal management of congenital surgical disorders. Presently, he serves as Chief, Section of Fetal Surgery and Co-Director, Fetal Care Center at Cleveland Clinic. Previously, Dr. Cass was at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, Texas where he practiced for 18 years. Dr. Cass is Co-Founder and former Co-Director of the Texas Children’s Fetal Center and a former Associate Professor in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery and Departments of Pediatrics and Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Baylor College of Medicine.
Dr. Cass grew up in Los Angeles, California. He received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University where he played on the highly competitive baseball team which won National Championships in 1987 and 1988 (the 2 years following his graduation). He received his medical degree from the UCLA School of Medicine, graduating AOA. Dr. Cass completed training in general surgery at the University of California, San Francisco and pediatric surgery at Texas Children’s Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. During his training, Dr. Cass completed a 3-year research fellowship studying fetal surgery and fetal tissue repair first at the fetal center of UCSF, and later at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. During those years, Dr. Cass had opportunity to train with the primary leaders in this field, including Michael Harrison, who most consider the “Father” of fetal surgery”, Scott Adzick, Alan Flake and Tim Crombleholme.
Dr. Cass’ CV is fairly extensive. He has authored more than 135 peer-reviewed publications and 185 abstract presentations at National or International Meetings. He has lectured nationally and internationally, generally on topics related to fetal surgery and the care of fetuses and infants with lung malformations, CDH, abdominal wall defects and other congenital disorders. Dr. Cass has held multiple leadership positions in national and international organizations that focus on fetal diagnosis and treatment. He currently serves as Chair of the Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment Committee of the American Pediatric Surgery Association (APSA) and he is Co-President elect of the International Fetal Medicine and Surgery Society.
Dr. Cass has two children, Harrison, a practicing lawyer in Houston, and Hannah, working in sales in Los Angeles, CA.
