Max R. Langham, Jr, M.D. is a Professor Emeritus of Surgery at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. He currently serves as the CEO and cofounder of Tio Companies, Inc., a startup that seeks to improve developmental and reproductive toxicology studies. Max was educated at the University of Florida earning a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Physics and the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine where he earned his medical degree in 1981. His surgical residency was at the Medical College of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University, followed by a fellowship in pediatric surgery at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children, and Temple University. After joining the Division of Pediatric Surgery at the University of Florida as an Assistant Professor in 1989 he rose to the rank of Professor and Chief. He moved to the University of Tennessee in Memphis in 2005 where he served as Chief of the Division of Pediatric Surgery, and Director of the Residency Program in Pediatric Surgery until 2014. He served as the Vice Chairman of the Department of Surgery at the University of Tennessee, until his retirement in January 2021. In retirement Max has remained engaged in the Children's Oncology Group and a number of other professional organizations. He continues to publish on interests including hepatic neoplasms and other hepatobiliary disorders of children, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, and surgical risk assessment. Max is an avid pilot and part time flight instructor. He and his wife , Sue have been married 45 years and have 3 children and 2 grandchildren. They enjoy time with family and friends on their farm in Illinois, and continue to travel frequently.
