Eunice Y. Huang, MD, MS, Professor of Pediatric Surgery, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, graduated from Yale University in Psychobiology and completed medical school at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine, where she was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. She trained in General Surgery at the Los Angeles County + University of Southern California Medical Center and completed a wound healing research fellowship at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. She obtained her fellowship in Pediatric Surgery at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, followed by a MS in Epidemiology at UTHSC. Dr. Huang is triple boarded in General Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, and Clinical Informatics. She is currently the Vice Chair of Surgical Quality and Patient Safety for the Section of Surgical Sciences, and the Associate Surgeon-in-Chief at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Huang has held leadership roles in the clinical arena, in education, health informatics, and research. She was the Program Director for the UTHSC Pediatric Surgery Fellowship from 2014 to 2020 and continues to be engaged in surgical education at VUMC. She is passionate about education as it pertains not only to surgical fellows, but also to residents, medical students, patients, and practicing surgeons. As the Chair of the APSA Education Committee, her committee creates high quality educational content for all the members of the community. Her interest in creating thriving environments for surgical trainees has taken her into the world of professional development coaching. This work has been shown to improve wellness in trainees during the rigors of surgical training. She is the Co-Director of the APSA Coaching Program, which provides coaching resources to pediatric surgery fellows and early career pediatric surgeons.
Dr. Huang’s sustained interest in clinical informatics, working to leverage its capabilities to optimize patient safety and improve surgical quality, brought her to her current roles as Vice Chair for Surgical Quality and Patient Safety and the Chief Surgical Quality Officer. In these roles, she works with many talented and dedicated individuals across multiple disciplines to solve complex problems and to nurture VUMC’s strong culture of safety, working always to be a high reliability organization.
Dr. Huang holds memberships in the American Pediatric Surgical Association, American College of Surgeons, American Academy of Pediatrics, Southern Surgical Association, Society of University Surgeons, American Medical Informatics Association, and the Association of Women Surgeons. She is a fellow in the Executive Leadership in Health Care Program, a track of the ELAM Program at Drexel University, and a past recipient of the American Surgical Association-Association of Women Surgeons Surgical Leaders Fellowship Grant. She is a member of the ACS Board of Governors representing the AAP Section on Surgery.
Dr. Huang is married to Dr. Raymond Gardocki, an orthopedic endoscopic spine surgeon, and they have three sons, Alex, TJ, and Ryan. They are a tight knit family. Their favorite pastimes include tinkering on the piano/guitar/violin together and traveling to new places as a family.
